A Different Kind of Greenhouse

Its February here in Nelson and lots of people are starting to think about summer now that the days are getting longer. And with summer comes the joyous time of planting seeds, growing plants and harvesting food. However, what if you’d like to plant now? What if you just can’t wait for the ground outside to thaw to get your veggies on the go?

Verge Permaculture’s got some excellent ideas on how to design and build a greenhouse for your touch and go climate. There are several options for style: the traditional Southern European style (glass on all sides) is great for capturing diffuse light, but bad for keeping heat in during long, cold winters. The style Verge recommends is called a passive solar greenhouse ( how-to create one ) and involves building an angled glass (or plastic) plane on only the South facing side while utilizing the other three sides for maximum insulation. What a cool building idea! Rob (of Verge Permaculture) is even thinking of putting in a salt water aquatic environment into his to grow fish.
